Continuing Education Credits - Written Exam

The Written Examination process is designated to continuing education credit hours as described below.

Self-Instructional

Exam Day: A day in April of each year

The Written Examination is a comprehensive exam that assesses the examinee's knowledge of basic sciences and clinical concepts based on criterion-referenced testing. Examinees will be measured against the skill and knowledge represented by each test item. The difficulty of each item for the minimally-competent examinee is the basis for setting the Criterion Standard, one that is represented as an absolute standard on a Benchmark Scale updated every five years. The examination is composed of 240 multiple-choice questions on subject areas outlined on the ABO website and divided into 4 modules.  The examination lasts 5 hours.

The ABO designates the Written Examination activities for 5 continuing education credits.

The following objectives should be met by the examinee following participation in the above mentioned activities:

  • Sharpen skills in currently accepted modalities of therapy.
  • Sharpen knowledge of basic and applied sciences and clinical concepts.

Prerequisite

Applicant must have graduated or have completed a minimum of eighteen (18) months of his/her advanced specialty education program in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) by the written examination date in order to be eligible to take the Written Examination.
