Continuing Education Credits

Certain parts of the Initial Clinical Examination / Craniofacial Examination and Certification Renewal Examination process are designated to continuing education credit hours.  The following activities and associated credit hours are listed below. 

 

Initial Clinical Examination / Craniofacial Examination

Self-Instructional
Release Date: 4-6 months prior to exam date click here for exam dates
Expiration Date: One week prior to the start of the exam week

Case Review/Preparation Activity: Review and prepare clinical cases including case reports and patient records. Participants will engage in critical thinking and improve ability in determining skeletal and dental changes occurring in patients over time and use those skills to set standards of care for the patient.  Participants will learn to score cases to determine complexity and treatment results using the Discrepancy Index and Grading System for Dental Casts and Panoramic Radiographs. Case review results should be submitted to the Board for final review prior to the exam day. (Self-Instructional, Lecture) 7 credit hours

Clinical Examination Activity: Assessment of the participant’s evaluation and treatment plan for one case provided by the ABO as well assessment for six cases submitted by the examinee. (Lecture) 3 credit hours

 

The ABO designates these Initial Clinical Examination activities for 10 continuing education credits.

 

The following objectives should be met by the examinee following participation in the above mentioned activities:

ð        Sharpen skills in currently accepted modalities of therapy.

ð        Practice self-critique in terms of record quality, treatment objectives and final results.

ð        Elevate the level of orthodontic care for the public by encouraging excellence in clinical practice and specialty education.

ð        Provide the opportunity to learn from, communicate with, and be constructively helpful to other professional disciplines.

ð        Strengthen rationale and decision making skills.

ð        Build upon current research skills.

 

Certification Renewal Examination

Self-Instructional

Option I:

Case Review / Analysis: Assessment of the participant’s evaluation and treatment plan for three cases provided by the ABO (Self-Instructional) 3 credit hours

 

The ABO designates the Certification Renewal Examination activities for 3 continuing education credits.

The following objectives should be met by the examinee following participation in the above mentioned activities:

ð        Sharpen skills in currently accepted modalities of therapy.

ð        Practice self-critique in terms of record quality, treatment objectives and final results.

ð        Elevate the level of orthodontic care for the public by encouraging excellence in clinical practice and specialty education.

Prerequisite

Graduate of CODA accredited advanced specialty orthodontic program and successful completion of the ABO Written Examination.  Successful completion of Initial Clinical Examination is also required for the Certification Renewal Examination.

 

Examiners

All Examiners are involved in orthodontic and dental societies, engage in a full or part time practice of orthodontics and/or hold an appointment as a full or part time clinical faculty member of an accredited orthodontic program.

 

Cost, Cancellations and Refunds

The cost for CE Credits is included in the examination registration and is non-refundable and non-transferable.
